( June 16) What a great event was staged by the Oklahoma Trail Runners Association. The Green People Trail Run was a huge success. The Katharine Cromwell and Keith McCombs and many others were hard to put on an event that included some great trails, a poker run, followed by beer hot dogs, prizes, finisher hats and medals, a croquet game and some great company.
As we showed up to the race we were given three cards to start the poker hand. After each four mile loop you were handed three more cards. Some folks ran only one lap while others ran four or more laps. After the run many of us just sat around and traded running stories and told about some of the adventures we had been on. six of us played croquet in the park and others sampled the great hot dogs and veggie dogs.

In attendance were: Katharine Cromwell, Keith McCombs, Herve Lucier, Bill Goodier, Melissa Banks, Bill Snipes, Troy, Donna, Tanya, Desiree Margagliano, Bret Sholar, Peggy Wood, Ric and Francis Williams, Cara, Joel McCarty, Brian Hoover and others.

L-R Debbie Spriggs, Johnny Spriggs, John Hargrove, Ken Childress, Randy Ellis, Nicole Ellis, Tiffany Kasey, Nicole's fiancee', Marci Ellis. Not pictured Caroline Glenn and Brian Hoover
The following Taturs ran in the marathon: Randy Ellis, Johnny Spriggs, Ken Childress, Brian Hoover, and Caroline Glenn!!!. This was the 30th running of the Andy Payne Memorial Foot Races which included a 5K, 10K and a marathon. The marathon had 64 finishers. It is an extremely flat course and is comprised of a short out and back then three eight mile loops around Lake Overholser. Click here to view full results.

Randy Ellis' daughter Nicole, finishing her first marathon at such an appropriate place!!
Western States Update!!! Ken woke up sick the day before, with a runny nose, upset stomach, general blaaas. He thought it probably had something to do with the altitude. He just felt bad and missed the cut off at mile 16. They checked his blood pressure and it was through the roof.
He is in good spirits and thanks all of you who had him in your thoughts and prayers. If you woould like to send him an email here is his email address:

Ken Childress dreamed about running in the Super Bowl of trail runs (Western States Endurance Run) He trained for it. He qualified for it. Then on Saturday 12/2 his name was chosen in a lottery (about a one in four chance to get picked). Now he is going to the chosen land. Congrats Ken. Click here to see the proof.

We have a very fun Trail Run coming up with our sister club OTRA (Oklahoma Trail Runners Association) On Saturday June 16, 2007 at 8:30am, I invite you all and your families to the inaugural Green People Trail Run.
The run will be held at Pat Murphy Park/Bluff Creek Trails, at the corner of W. Hefner and Meridian. Registration and event instructions start at 8:30am. Runners take off at 9:00am. Run as many loops as you like on this 5 mile course. Two aid stations stocked with water, Gatorade, oranges, pretzels and whatever else our OTRA leaders think of! There will be a Poker Run. You will receive 3 cards at the completion of each loop. Best poker hand wins… SOMETHING GREAT! Run a lap, get your cards, eat a hot dog, then run another. No penalty for taking long breaks between laps. But the more laps you run, the more cards you get. Have your cards ready at 1:30pm for the Poker Game. You are welcome to keep running laps after that, but the aid stations will be cleaned up soon after.
This event is not a race. No bib numbers, no timing chips. The winners are all participants who will learn about global warming, ways to limit it, recycling and to respect the Earth. What better way to celebrate the Summer Solstice!
Your $5.00 donation / per person will get you a wonderful event, aid stations during the run, and family entertainment at the Start/Finish area. Hot-dogs, veggie dogs, beer and soft drinks available throughout the day.
Please let the webmaster know if you plan on attending.

Swimmers ripple the early morning water as they head for the first buoy!!
But most of all we need help CHEERING all these amazing athletes on to the finish. We really would like to put on a good show so that all the participants will know what a fun group TATUR really is. If you have never watched a triathlon before, you are in for a treat. These athletes will swim in Skiatook Lake for just under a mile, then bike for 25 miles, and finish it all off with a 6.2 mile hilly run.
Triathletes get out of the water and get ready for the bike segment.
We will be putting up funny signs before the aid station. We will have music blaring and if you have any ideas for a theme, we could all dress up and be crazy!!! Bring your squirt guns, frisbees, pogo-sticks, Roller blades, and any other thing you can think of to make this a fun morning.
Click here to check out the website for directions. Please let the webmaster know if you can help for any amount of time from 7am till 1pm.

Well the second annual Barkley Book Fair was a roaring success!! We had twelve people participate in the "Day Run" and tan brave souls venture in to the night. The weather was warm and muggy and threatened to rain throughout the night.

The "Day Run" participants kick up some dust!!
Ken sent the day runners off at 7:08pm and most had no problem finding the well hidden books and return back to the start finish with the six pages. Kathy Hoover and Alex eaton tied for first place with a time of 50:06 and all six pages!! Our Arkansan TATUR Jason Thomas had to return back in the woods after he had crossed the finish line to find one of the books and our major sponsor fro the Book Fair, Kirk Van Vleet (Thank you Kirk!!!) had to take a DQ since he could only find 3 of the six books.

Alex Eaton and Kathy Hoover cross the Tiki Torch finish line in first place
The day run was very tame yet still was a challenge for those not prepared to handle the difficult terrain the Turkey Mtn.dishes out.

The "Night Run" was a whole different adventure!!! First of all the course was purposely not marked very well. The RD gave us a very vague map and sent us on our way. To stay on track you had to hunt, peck, backtrack, go bushwhacking' and try to keep from screaming when you could not find any of the pink ribbons. Prior knowledge of the mountain's landmarks proved to be invaluable.
Several runners spent hours just trying to find those darn pink ribbons. Also the course was about ten times more difficult than the day run. There was one 1/4 mile section where if you slipped and fell, you would most like tumble for at least 50 feet. The course was so difficult that RD Ken Childress had to hike in rope, ladders and build a platform so that runners would not plummet 60ft to their death if they fell off of a certain boulder.

Make sure your life insurance is paid up!!
On one section we had to go fishing for the elusive book, and on another we were forced to wade through three feet of muddy water to retrieve a book in a chasm. Another book was hidden in a cave where a very mad turkey vulture had hidden her eggs.

A monster lurks in the dead center of this cave.. It pretty much scared the bejeezues out of the photographer
For the grand finale we had to find a magazine that was secreted in an area where gay men tend to hangout. The magazine pages that we had to rip out had some very interesting snapshots to say the least.

Mike Snyder going down the second of three ladders on the "Night Run"
Some of us had a great time, some swore we were all nuts for getting lost for hours in the woods till midnight, others just enjoyed a different type of adventure. Anyway ya look at it, it sure beats sitting at home naked on a beanbag eating Cheetos!!!!
