Great job to all who participated!!!! Taturs Raton Parmain, Tim King and Julie Thomas organized this great event which drew over 300 finishers. Seventeen Taturs joined together in the festivities and a great time was had by all.

Toe Stumpers toe the line in anticipation.

Pre-race was heavy rain but the showers stopped before most of the participants arrived. The 9am start for both the 5 mile and 10 mile participants made for an impressive crowd as everyone was anxious to get moving. The course was well marked and the mud made for some fun slips and falls.

3rd place overall for Bill Richardson
Tatur Bill Richardson comes in 4th place overall !!

Taturs Raton Parmain,Tim King, Lisa Wei Haas and several other wonderful volunteers worked hard to make this a memorable event. The 300 finishers was roughly 100 more than in 2006. This just goes to show how much trail running is gaining in popularity.

In the men's10 Mile division Raton (1:16:59) beat out another Tatur, Bill Richardson (1:22:32) for 3rd place. The women's forerunners featured new Tatur member Mary Minielly (1:44:44) edging out Barbara Drew (1:48:38) for 3rd place.

As the race approached the halfway point, the sun came out and made for a great morning. As impressive as some of the times were at today's race, 90% of the runners simply were out there to enjoy the scenery, visit with friends both new and old, and simply enjoy a brief pause from running in the "asphalt jungle". Tatur Kari Sever Wins the Cross Timbers Trail Run

Kari Severs won the 2007 Cross Timbers Trail Marathon on February 24th 2007. Unfortunately her results and race report were not posted due to the webmasters error. I have had numerous occasions where email is being routed to a bulk folder where it is getting lost. I hope to find out why and remedy the problem.

Congratulations to Kari and her husband Mike for their conquests at the Cross Timbers Trail run as well as the Grasslands Trail Run. Please click here to read their race reports.

Keystone Training Run

Our next club run will be on February 10th 2007. We will meet in the parking lot of RunnersWorld (45th & Peoria) at 6:30am and caravan over to the trail head at Keystone Lake. For those of you who have not run these trails, they are technical but not as difficult as Turkey Mountain. We plan to run about six miles at a very leisurely pace.

The Toe Stumping Trail Run will be held on these trails on Feb 24th at 9am. New this year is a 10 mile distance, in addition to the five and two mile races. This is a great event and we encourage all the Taturs to enter. Here is the link to the online registration and the entry form

If you have never participated in a Tatur event, this would be a great way to get to know some of the members. We will have the Tatur tent set up and will have refreshments provided after the run. I will send out emails shortly with more info. If you have any questions, shoot me an email at brian@tatur.org. We are expecting a large turnout and it would be helpful to know how many people plan to attend so that we can better gauge the amount of refreshments. If you have a Garmin or any GPS enabled watch, please bring it as Tatur Ron Haveman will be trying to get some pretty accurate mapping done of the area that we can in turn put on the Tatur website. Please email me at the above address if you plan to participate.

Brrr, It Was Cold at the Tatur Training Run!
22 Taturs show up to the Lake Keystone Trails

Training Run at Lake Keystone
Taturs at the Lake Keystone Training Run.

Twenty Taturs showed up on Saturday February 10th at Lake Keystone for a bone chilling 22° six mile trail run. We all met at RunnersWorld then ran the trails. Afterwards we got to know each other better, ate some snacks and drank hot coffee and hot chocolate. We had a few trail virgins out there. Congrats to Teriann and Teresa for surviving their first trail run. We also had a few Taturs that were at their first Tatur event. Special thanks to Mike Richardson, Mike and Kari Sever, Peggy Wood and Teriann Vandeventer for joining in on the fun.

Congrats Taturs on a Hard Fought 50 Miler and 100 Mile Rocky Raccoon Trail Race

RR100ers at RunnersWorld
L-R (Johnny Spriggs, Alex Eaton, Ken Childress, Jason Thomas, Randy Ellis, Kathy Hoover, David Crisp, Kenny Aston, Jonathan Johnson)

The 2007 edition of the Rocky Raccoon Trail Race was a very special event for several Taturs. Randy Ellis finished the 100 miler then got an ugly case of the flu on the way back to Tulsa. Kathy Hoover ran the race of her life, nearly breaking 24 hours in her first 100 miler. Alex Eaton avenged his DNF at the Arkansas Traveller. Kenny Aston finished a grueling 100 miles never having done a trail race or a race over marathon distance. Ken Childress narrowly beat the 6am cutoff but with the cold and mud dropped with 80 miles under his belt. Brian Hoover dropped at 65 miles due to a knee injury.

Jen Shelton
Jen Shelton the first female and 3rd overall finisher in the 100 miler

Jonathan Johnson finished his first fifty miler!!! David Crisp set a record for 52 year olds in the fifty mile race. Johnny Spriggs ran the 50 miler which kicks off his grueling schedule of 14 marathons in four months.

Jason Thomas paced for Alex Eaton and Mandy McCollum paced for Kathy Hoover. Way to go Taturs we are very proud of all of you!!!

No Excuses!!!

Ken Childress & Kathy Hoover
Ken Childress & Kathy Hoover struggle to get up a slippery area of Turkey Mtn.

From Friday morning January 12th, 2007 till Sunday night, Tulsa OK experienced three days of sub-freezing temps, sleet and ice which closed schools disrupted travel and forced many businesses to close early.

After two days of cabin fever several Taturs decided to brave the elements and get in a five mile run up at Turkey Mtn. Brian and Kathy Hoover, Alex Eaton and Ken Childress bundled up started running on the Ridgeline trail. Here is the amazing thing, it really was not that slippery on the flat sections. The usual rocks and roots were all filled in with the sleet and the normally technical sections were flat and smooth.

We actually dressed too warmly and were peeling off layers very early into the run. Although most of the run was very easy and footing was not an issue we did have a couple of close calls. One was when Alex started to slip down a steep ravine and had to be pulled back up to safety. The other close call was when we were running around the edge of a frozen pond and several of us came close to sliding into the edges of the frigid water.

After the run we went back to Ken and Dana's house where we ate hot clam chowder and a cold beer. Remember that extreme conditions often make for the funniest run's. So save the excuses, get out there and have some slippery, safe fun.

Them Thar are Some Mighty Big Mountains at the
Athens-Big Fork Trail Marathon

Crossing one of streams
One of the many stream crossings.

On Saturday January 6th, 2007 Dennis Crosby, Alex Eaton, Mike Snyder, Ken Childress and Brian Hoover ran the Athens-Big Fork Trail Marathon. This is billed as the toughest marathon east of the Rockies and it certainly lived up to its reputation

The climbs are so steep that you can lean over and.....Click here to view pictures and read the rest of the story.

Several Brave Taturs Attempt to Tackle the Hardest Marathon East of the Rockies

Tim King climbs one of the sixteen mountains in this trecherous race
Tim King climbs up one of the sixteen mountains in the Athens/Big Fork Marathon

The Pikes Peak Marathon is one of the most difficult marathons in the United States. Several people who have done both the Pikes' Peak and the Athens/Big Fork Marathon swear that the 26.2 miles in the Ouchita Mountains is more difficult. The run features eight mountains that are climbed on the way out then the process is repeated on the way back. This run does not feature many switchbacks. Most of it is best described as going straight up the mountain, hang on to a tree, catch your breath, and repeat. However the trail features some of the most breathtaking scenery in the five state area.

On Saturday January 6th, the following TATURs will attempt this incredible run. Ken Childress, Mike Snyder, Alex Eaton, Dennis Crosby, Tom Brennan (Course Record Holder), Tim King and Raton Parmain will tackle this insane adventure. We will keep ya posted folks..... (1/1) On New Years Day on a cold sunny morning several Taturs and TAT (Tulsa Area Triathletes) met up at the Arkansas River to participate in the 1st Annual Polar Bear Plunge which was organized by Taturs Scott and Kathy Ostrem. A crowd of about thirty showed up and almost twenty jumped into the 40° degree water. We had a blast and laughed at some of the hilarious outfits which were worn. Race Into the New YearThe second annual Race into the New Year was a huge success. Over 350 signed up to run in this spectacular race which started at 11:45pm on New Years Day. The race featured some very talented runners and afterwards everyone was treated to pizza, black-eyed peas, cornbread, cookies, champagne, beer and the best door prizes of any race I have been to.

Six pairs of running shoes were given away by RunnersWorld. Not to mention tons of technical fabric clothing and other great items. Thrace shirts were long sleeve tech shirts. All of this for only $18. You do not want to miss this race next year as RD Kathy Sager states will feature a full blown fireworks display. Click here to view all the Taturs' results.
