Course InformationLake McMurtry is Lake McMurtry Topo Map and Course (1.65 MB PDF) Description: Click here to view a Topography Map (1.65 MB PDF) with course markings. You can print it out and take a closer look if you like. The trails and scenery in April are absolutely beautiful. You will wind around peninsulas with breathtaking views of Lake McMurtry. Runners will complete one passage of the north and south trails, each 7.5 miles, for the 25K and the same loops repeated for the 50K. The trails pass through Oak/Hickory forests, Red Cedar meadows and run along the shores of Lake McMurtry. The course is accurately measured, sheltered, marked, 95 percent on single track trails, and less than 5 percent on dirt and gravel road. The trails are well maintained although there are some rocks and roots. There are no large hills and all stream crossings can (usually) be made with dry feet. This race is sanctioned by USATF. Aid Stations: There are four full service aid stations, two on the NW trail, one at the start/finish and one 3 miles into the SW trail. Standard ultrafare will be provided. Gatorade, water and Cola will be the fluid replacements. Trail Dangers: There are quite a few roots that won’t move no matter how hard you kick them. The rocks aren’t that bad. They don’t move either but there are a lot less of them. If it is, or has been wet the bottoms of the stream crossings may be slippery. Descend with care; sometimes there are rocks at the bottom. The most dangerous animal you will run into the Lake McMurtry Trails is another human being. The trails are open, so be aware of mountain bikers and other users. Please yield the trail to faster runners and the mountain bikers. The gunfire you may hear at the north end of the course is nothing to worry about, there is a gun range located nearby. |
